Liveblog: Germany vs Uruguay, Third Place Playoff
Here’s a good article from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “Liveblog: Germany vs Uruguay, Third Place Playoff” .

Welcome to our liveblog of the alternate reality World Cup final, also known as the third place playoff match between losing semifinalists Germany and Uruguay. Read up on the game with our Germany vs Uruguay preview, visit the Germany blog for an excellent quote from potential all time World Cup goalscorer Klose and the Uruguay blog for some rousing South American pride.
Whatever happens in this game, I’m mostly hoping it will be a chance to enjoy one last look at two of the more enjoyable teams of World Cup 2010 and wave a World Cup farewell to players like Thomas Mueller and Mesut Oezil for Germany, Diego Forlan and Luis “boo?” Suarez for Uruguay. The liveblog window is below, where that man Chris will keep you updated.

Preview: Germany v Uruguay, 3rd Place Game.
Here’s a new article from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “Preview: Germany v Uruguay, 3rd Place Game.” .

BIG PICTURE
The big picture is the story of a few small pictures. The most prominent and historical is Miroslav Klose’s pursuit of the all-time goal scoring record, currently sitting one behind Ronaldo at 14, but maybe not sitting much at all with a back injury going into the game. On an individual level, it’s an enormous game for Klose and Germany – who will be feeding him Jabulanis ad nauseam should he play.
The other striker being watched is Diego Forlan, arguably one of the favorites for Golden Ball as player of the tournament despite on the losing end of the semifinal, and his propensity for shooting from absolutely anywhere on the pitch, including corners, which makes spectating fun.
And then there are the subplots: the return of hero/villain Luis Suarez + hands; the potential Golden Ball runs of both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mesut Ozil; the chance to see just how much of a difference Thomas Mueller makes in this side; and one last chance to see this phase of an evolving Germany, who will be one of the co-favorites for Polkraine 2012 and perhaps Brazil 2014.
WHAT’S AT STAKE
Pride and final standing, but those are relatively minimal to the outside observer. A losing semifinalist is a losing semifinalist, whether they win the consolation game or not. A win will help, but ultimately it does not change history.
So the rest is for individual glory.
OUR PREDICTION
We won’t see Uruguay recreating their tactics against France or Germany continually being pressed back into their own third a la Spain, which means this one should be enjoyable with a decent number of goals. So….3-2 Germany. Because Paul picked them too.
And Klose gets one.

Liveblog: Uruguay vs Ghana, Quarterfinal
Here’s a good post from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “Liveblog: Uruguay vs Ghana, Quarterfinal” .

Welcome to the liveblog of the Uruguay vs Ghana World Cup quarterfinal. With Brazil losing to Netherlands earlier, Uruguay are one of the three remaining South American teams in the quarterfinals. Ghana are the last remaining African team in the first African World Cup, and only the third ever African team to make it to a World Cup quarterfinal. If they get to the semis, they’ll be the first African team to do so.
Yet maybe the more exciting thing about this Ghana team is the youth of the squad, which features many of the players from 2009’s U-20 World Cup winning team. Who needs experience when you’ve got pace and talent?

Preview: Uruguay vs. South Korea, Round of 16
Here’s a new article from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “Preview: Uruguay vs. South Korea, Round of 16″ .

THE BIG PICTURE
The first game in the World Cup Round of 16. Excitement. Group A winners Uruguay vs Group B runners-up South Korea.
In three group games, Uruguay conceded precisely zero goals, while forwards Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez did damage to the South African and Mexican defences. South Korea were impressive in their first game, beating Greece 2-0, but looked defensively suspect against Argentina (conceding four) and Nigeria (conceding two). Two big upside are the from of Man Utd midfielder Park Ji-Sung and the fact that Park Chu-Young is one of the few players to figure out how to a Jabulani past a goalkeeper from a direct free-kick.
WHAT’S AT STAKE
As with all Round of 16 games, there’s a place in the quarter-final at stake, where the winner of this game will play either Ghana or the USA. Which brings up the point: One team out of Uruguay, South Korea, USA and Ghana will be a World Cup 2010 semi-finalist.
Bet on Uruguay vs. South Korea
OUR PREDICTION
Tough to call, but I think Uruguay’s defensive superiority (have you seen Jorge Fucile’s perfect slide tackles?) will be enough to see them through 1-0 after extra time.

Preview: Mexico vs. Uruguay
Here’s an interesting post from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “Preview: Mexico vs. Uruguay” .

THE BIG PICTURE
Mexico and Uruguay can both guarantee progress to the knockouts with a draw. But neither will be keen to face likely Group B winners Argentina in the Round of 16, so the two may compete to top the group rather than finishing second.
WHAT’S AT STAKE

Uruguay is currently top on goal difference, and will probably be keen to keep it that way. The celeste proved against France that they’re very much capable of playing for a goalless draw if needed, so it will all depend on whether Mexico wants to push for the win and first place, or accept the draw and second place, and the likely game against Argentina.
The risk for both teams is that a loss mathematically exposes them to the threat of France or South Africa taking second place, should either of those team rack up a massive win when they meat. Group A qualification scenarios explained in more detail here, but basically a draw is the least risky option for both teams.
KICKOFF
4pm local time, 10am US eastern.
OUR PREDICTION
I think Mexico will try for the win, but try to do so without (to paraphrase Diego Maradona) “putting all their beef on the grill” and exposing themselves. Uruguay are defensively strong enough to withstand a half-hearted attack, so this finishes 0-0.

Preview: South Africa v. Uruguay
Here’s an interesting post from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “Preview: South Africa v. Uruguay” .

THE BIG PICTURE
South Africa’s beloved Bafana Bafana goes into this match on fairly high spirits, after their 1-1 draw with Mexico that was almost a win. Uruguay, on the other hand, has to be asking a lot of questions after their scoreless draw with France, a match that neither side did much to impress in. All of Africa, and many neutrals outside, will be on Bafana’s side, but Uruguay can and may very well do better than they did the first match.
WHAT’S AT STAKE
Group A is all even, with the four sides on 1 point each, but Mexico and South Africa have the slimmest of advantages by way of having a goal scored. The Bafana boys play France last, and won’t want to leave themselves needing a win from that one. Uruguay needs to show that they are more than a team with two brilliant strikers. I know this gets tiring to hear before every single match, but this one is really important not to lose.
Bet on South Africa vs. Uruguay
OUR PREDICTION
Going into this tournament, I would have picked Uruguay to give South Africa a very hard time, and they still might, but after watching the first match, I’m not so sure. The South African midfield looked far better than Uruguay’s, and I may be getting caught up in the hometown hope, but I’m going for a South Africa 1-0 victory.
