The Summer’s Biggest Transfer Target: Paul the Octopus.

The Summer’s Biggest Transfer Target: Paul the Octopus.

What, you thought he was done? Never. Paul is in demand; hell, Paul is demand.
In a move befitting their footballing counterparts, the Madrid zoo has inquired about Paul’s services and launched a transfer saga of Jules Verne-esque proportions. Florentino Perez was reportedly overheard yelling “we must have that octopus!” during the final celebrations, and fired six people who tried to bring him takoyaki.
Their promises sound like a retread of the recruiting campaign aimed at Cristiano Ronaldo last summer, right down to the “best attention” and being “one of the most loved and charismatic animals of the Madrid Zoo”. (He moonlights.)
“The zoo also guarantees that Paul will receive the best attention, reflecting the great affection in which he is held by all the Spanish people since he predicted that the Spanish team would win the football World Cup,” said Madrid zoo spokeswoman Amparo Fernandez. “We hope that within the next few days we will be able to confirm news that the admirable Paul will be part of the club of the most loved and charismatic animals of the Madrid Zoo.”
Knowing just how transfer negotiations to Madrid are supposed to pan out, the Oberhauseen zoo which currently holds the rights to Paul are playing the game and have declared emphatically Paul is not for sale – at any price. Which of course he is, because they saw how much Kaka nabbed last summer, but they can’t tell that to Madrid.
“We are not in contact with Madrid Zoo. And we know nothing about swapping Paul for another animal or him going to Madrid Zoo for a transfer sum,” Sea Life spokeswoman Tanja Munzig said.
Expect a shady midnight meeting involving Jose Mourinho in which he promises him a 150% wage hike as well as to ‘love him long time’. Meanwhile, rumor has it Real will be throwing in Fernando Gago as part of their next offer – he looks like a squid anyway.
Keep it here for As Paul’s World Turns.

Don’t Stop Watching Soccer Just Because the World Cup is Over
Here’s an interesting article from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “Don’t Stop Watching Soccer Just Because the World Cup is Over” .
This post is addressed to everyone who didn’t consider themselves full on football fans before June 11th 2010, but tuned in to watch the World Cup because it’s one of those unmissable global events. I’m not exclusively talking to Americans here. I could be talking to Australians or New Zealanders, or anyone really. But if I’m honest I am mostly talking to Americans. Because that’s where I live.
If you watched the World Cup but didn’t really care for what you saw, then move along. This post is not for you. If you watched the World Cup and thought you might want to get into this soccer thing year round (as opposed to quadrennially) then read on. Because we in the football loving world have some advice for you…
The good news is that the football season is much much more than one month of football every four years. It basically never ends.
International tournament football will be back next summer with Copa America 2011 (like a World Cup for South American teams) and before that the European teams will begin the process of qualifying for Euro 2012 (like a World Cup for Euro teams). But aside from all that, there’s the bread and butter of club football.
Here’s a half decent analogy, using basketball: The World Cup was like the Olympic basketball tournament, where every nation sends their best players. Club football is like the NBA. Except instead of just one all-powerful league filled with all-star players, there are several.
Good news is that we have a whole other website – a sister site to World Cup Blog – that’s focused on club football. It’s called The Offside, and you can find it by clicking that link.
On the front page you’ll find informative posts like this list of kickoff dates for every European league, as well as plenty of news, humour and opinion from the wide wide wide (that’s three wides, so you know it’s wide) world of club football.
As well as the front page, we also have 250+ team specific blogs for clubs large and small. So if you want to read about Man Utd, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Internazionale and many many more, then it’s all there. Most of these teams can be found on television (or somewhere on the internet).
Choosing which of these leagues to watch and which of these teams to support is a personal decision. Most agree that the big five leagues are (in alphabetical order) England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. So if you have family ties or a cultural affinity with any of those places, then maybe that’s a way to start. But choosing a team to support from amongst those leagues is another matter. Maybe a topic for another post.
If you like the flashy tournament angle of the World Cup, then you’ll be please to hear about the UEFA Champions League, in which the very best teams from around Europe compete against each other for a big trophy and big money. Good news is that this tournament happens every single year.
As well as watching the big leagues and reading The Offside, you may want to get out of the house and find a team see live in the flesh. If you’re in the US then find your nearest MLS team, or a team from the lower divisions of US Soccer. Football’s great on the TV, and discussing it on blogs is a lot of fun. But nothing beats seeing it happen right in front of you.

José Antonio Camacho Enjoyed Andrés Iniesta’s Goal
Here’s a good article from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “José Antonio Camacho Enjoyed Andrés Iniesta’s Goal” .
José Antonio Camacho is a former Real Madrid and Spain left back, who has been working as a co-commentator for Spanish television station Cuatro at World Cup 2010. While there, Camacho has become something of a YouTube phenomenon for his on-air goal celebrations. Not quite David After Dentist, but pretty big.
Above you can see his reaction when Andrés Iniesta scored Spain’s World Cup winning goal against Netherlands yesterday. There’s a big shout of “GOOOOOL!”, lots of microphone shaking, and a proclomation that “Iniesta de mi vida!”, which according to Sid Lowe means “Iniesta of my life!”
That’s a Real Madrid legend (Camacho served Real for 15 years from 1974 to 1989) screaming not easily translatable but definitely committal and complimentary things about a future Barcelona legend. Proof that Spain winning the World Cup is bigger than any club rivalry.

Spain’s Arrival In Madrid
Here’s a good post from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “Spain’s Arrival In Madrid” .
The champions touched down in Madrid today – and you can watch the whole descent via dodgy Sky feed here – and were then greeted by throngs and throngs of gracious supporters ready to sign over their first born and toss panties in the general direction of Sergio Ramos. Iker then hoisted the trophy as they exited the plane, many of them walking in straight lines.
Which, when you think about it, might be just as impressive as winning the title itself.

Spanish Superskills With Juan Mata
Here’s a good article from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “Spanish Superskills With Juan Mata” .
There’s a two day break in World Cup action, so we don’t have any goal or other match highlights to share today. But that’s OK. Because what we do have is this footage from one of Spain’s practice sessions in which young Valencia attacker Juan Mata completely befuddles Real Madrid defender Raul Albiol with a trick so complex I have no idea what to call it.
It’s a roll, it’s a change of direction, it’s maybe a crossover, it’s definitely a nutmeg. It’s good enough to warrant a celebration. It’s the sort of trick that makes me wish YouTube had a slow motion button. I want to study this move in detail and then fall over while trying to repeat it. Don’t expect to see Mata pulling this out during an actual World Cup game though. The 22 year old has so far only played 20 minutes of Spain’s campaign. Which I think underlines the quite unfair level of talent that currently exists in this Spain squad. Can anyone explain the Madonna “Like a Prayer” soundtrack though?

The Special 1 (TV) Makes His World Cup Debut
Here’s an interesting post from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “The Special 1 (TV) Makes His World Cup Debut” .

There’s something awfully suspicious happening at BBC headquarters – all the pieces are aligning.
First Sven took over the Ivory Coast, in turn dragging along Didier “Jacques Cousteau” Drogba; then Jose ran to Real Madrid, assuming puppet Ronny in the process; and finally Rafa Benitez picked up Jose’s old job in Milan. Is this a British conspiracy designed to have Special 1 TV take over the footballing world? Perhaps.
One thing hasn’t changed: it’s still as brilliant as ever.

Top Two Forge Ahead In Spain
Real Madrid CF edged a thrilling match against Valencia CF to remain within five points of FC Barcelona after the champions had defeated city rivals RCD Espanyol earlier on Saturday.
Ibrahimovi? winner
Barça were without Lionel Messi, who injured an ankle in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League victory at FC Dynamo Kyiv, but the Argentina forward was at Camp Nou to show the Ballon d’Or award he won earlier this month off to the fans. Zlatan Ibrahimovi? scored the only goal from the penalty spot in the 39th minute, after José Raúl Baena had impeded Xavi Hernández, to make it eleven goals in 13 league outings since his summer transfer.
Garay winner
Only David Villa has scored more than the Swede in the Liga this season, although the Spanish international’s 12th of the campaign was not enough to earn Valencia a point against Real Madrid, for whom Gonzalo Higuaín struck twice. Joaquín scored an 80th-minute leveller for the home team, who were beaten by a neat header from Madrid substitute Ezequiel Garay three minutes later.
Record run
Pep Guardiola’s Barça side, who equalled the club record of 15 consecutive matches undefeated set under Terry Venables at the start of the 1984/85 season, have played a game more than Madrid. Elsewhere, teenage striker Iker Muniain came off the bench to inspire Athletic Club to a 2-1 win at Real Zaragoza earlier on Saturday. The Bilbao club are up to seventh.
Bari compound Juve misery
Juventus followed up their midweek UEFA Champions League defeat by FC Bayern München with another in Serie A on Saturday, AS Bari claiming a 2-1 victory which lifts them up to fifth in Serie A.
