Animated Diego Forlan Golden Ball Tribute

I officially heart this. Because the only personal honour better then receiving the World Cup Golden Ball for best player – as Uruguay’s Diego Forlan did – is having a cartoon/song combo made to immortalize your achievement. According to The Spoiler, the celebratory song is by The Golden Vuvuzelas and features the line “his hair is like the sun on the Uruguay flag”. Superb.

Even better that that is the animated recreation of Luis Suarez’ “save” against Ghana, at the 0:45 mark, which makes the moment look perhaps a little mor heroic than it really was…

PostHeaderIcon Del Bosque: Messi Should’ve Won Golden Ball

Here’s a good post from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “Del Bosque: Messi Should’ve Won Golden Ball” . More here:
Del Bosque: Messi Should’ve Won Golden Ball

There are those that feel Lionel Messi was a disappointment in South Africa. There are those who feel he was good, but not great. And there are those who feel he was simply the best player at the tournament.

Toss Vicente Del Bosque into that latter category, because if he was in charge he’d be snatching the Golden Ball from Diego Forlan and handing it over to little Lionel, whose trophy cabinet is probably feeling unloved after a month without a trinket.

Of course that is if it wasn’t a Spanish win:

“Apart from our own [players] I preferred Messi,” he said. “Each game he played he made 20 chances to score, he is a phenomenon.

“We would have liked it to have been one of us. But Messi deserves the Golden Ball more than Forlan.”

For four games, Lionel was a cut above the rest. He was simply unstoppable until it came to the goal mouth, where keepers were suddenly finding an inner Lev Yashin and deflecting all that crossed their path. And then he met Germany, an excellent team with an excellent coach and excellent tactics, who shut down Diego Maradona.

Golden Ball material? That’s another story altogether, but who are we to argue with the man who just won a World Cup?

PostHeaderIcon All 145 Goals from World Cup 2010

Here’s an interesting post from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “All 145 Goals from World Cup 2010″ .

mueller goal

If there was one website out there that was going to find a video featuring every single goal of World Cup 2010, that website was going to be 101 Great Goals.

There were actually 145 goals (not including penalty shootouts) at World Cup 2010, some of which really were great. All 145 are shown in the video below, so if you have a spare 10 minutes then sit back, get yourself comfy (maybe have a snack handy) and click play…

I particularly enjoyed Maicon’s angled strike (which I still say he meant), both David Villa’s dribbly goal for Spain vs Honduras and his finishing of the Xavi, Iniesta passing move vs Portugal, all of Diego Forlan’s long range efforts for Uruguay, and Gio van Bronckhorst’s unexpected semifinal wonder-strike. How about you?

PostHeaderIcon World Cup 2010 Awards (official FIFA ones, not ours)

Here’s an interesting article from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “World Cup 2010 Awards (official FIFA ones, not ours)” .

h1_meritbadge

With all the World Cup action over and all the votes tallied, the World Cup awards can now be handed out. And there’s a lot of gold to go around. There’s the Golden Ball for best player (plus silver and bronze for runners up), the Golden Boot for top scorer, the Golden Glove (just one, this ‘aint boxing) for best goalkeeper and the not so golden but still prestigious Best Young Player award (the Golden iPod?)

Read on for an overview of who won what:

1255320_thumbGolden Ball for best player: Diego Forlan (Uruguay)
FIFA drew up the shortlist of 10, and the accredited media (so not World Cup Blog) voted the Uruguayan striker (and, based on this World Cup, creator) as the best player of the tournament. No arguments here.
Silver Ball: Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands)
Bronze Ball: David Villa (Spain)

golden shoeGolden Boot for top scorer: Thomas Mueller (Germany)
There was actually a four way tie at the top of the goalscoring chart with Mueller, David Villa, Wesley Sneijder and Diego Forlan all scoring five goals each. Tie-breaker was assists, which put Mueller on top with three.
Silver Shoe: David Villa (Spain)
Bronze Show: Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands)
Villa and Sneijder had one assist each, and so seems from the FIFA top scorer page (and I’m just guessing here) that Villa finishes above Sneijder based on fewer minutes plated (635 to Sneijder’s 652). No top scorer boots for Forlan, as he played 654 minutes, but luckily he’s got that Golden Ball to console him.

bypBest Young Player: Thomas Mueller (Germany)
Quite a successful awards haul for Mueller. After being named to a shortlist of three along with Mexico’s Gio dos Santos and Ghana’s Andre Ayew, teh 20 year old Mueller was named as Best Young Player by FIFA’s Technical Study Group. I’m assuming that Mueller being tournament top scorer made this an easy choice.

ggGolden Glove for best goalkeeper: Iker Casillas (Spain)
It’s not clear who decides this award, so I’m going to assume it’s the FIFA Technical Study Group again. Despite conceding to Switzerland in Spain’s opening game (which they lost 1-0), Casillas has been cool as a (non global warming threatened) glacier at World Cup 2010. I imagine competition for this award was tight, with guys like Switzerland’s Diego Benaglio, Portugal’s Eduardo, Uruguay’s Fernando Muslera and even Netherlands’ Maarten Stekelenburg all impressing (others too, but running out of space here). Personally I think Casillas deserves this purely for being brave enough to knock Carles Puyol down to get to a cross, but just two goals conceded in seven games plus captaining a World Cup winning team (and making important saves in the final) makes Casillas more than worthy.

fairplayFIFA Fair Play Award: Spain
I forgot they even did this. But apparently Spain’s eight yellow cards in seven games (five(!) of which came in the final) means the team averaged just 1.14 yellows per game, and zero reds.

(Spain also wins a thing called the World Cup trophy, for beating all the other teams) (except Switzerland)

PostHeaderIcon UAE Has The Right Idea, Declares A Fatwa On The Vuvuzela

Here’s a good post from World Cup Soccer – South Africa 2010 about “UAE Has The Right Idea, Declares A Fatwa On The Vuvuzela” .

AUSTRIA-ODD/VUVUZELA

The vuvuzela has become almost tolerable throughout the World Cup as our worries shift to the flight of the Jabulani, the suspect officiating and angry Germans trying to eat that adorable little octopus.

However, the Jabulani will not be following us back to the domestic and continental scenes, refereeing has always been suspect and Paul probably has better security than Angela Merkel at this point, with his upcoming world tour setting him up for life. The vuvuzela, however, will travel.

So the UAE is setting the right tone, declaring a fatwa the vuvuzela on the grounds that it could damage hearing. Hallelujah! I mean…

The horns that have blared at World Cup matches in South Africa make an unholy racket — according to a religious edict in the United Arab Emirates.

A fatwa by the UAE’s General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments declares that the now-famous blast from the plastic vuvuzela is not permitted in the Gulf country if it exceeds 100 decibels — about the sound of a passing train.

It says the typical vuvuzela blast is up to 127 decibels.

Hopefully this ruling will pass along to the rest of the world and the mere holding of a vuvuzela will result in a slow and painful death by Diego Forlan free kicks.

And the first to test these methods of execution should be the guy in the photo above, who created a diamond-encrusted vuvuzela which was picked up for a mere €17,000. Because that’s what the world needs – a luxury line of vuvuzelae which are thus acceptable at social gatherings simply because they wear diamonds. Kind of like Paris Hilton.
