Cesare Maldini, father of Paolo, has revealed that he is happy with the World Cup draw that has paired Italy with Paraguay, New Zealand and Slovakia.

However, the former Italy coach has warned the current Azzurri side of the quality of the Paraguayans, with particular emphasis on Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz.

“[Marcello] Lippi’s national team can be satisfied,” Maldini told Radio Incontro.

“Paraguay are a tough team, with South American feet and an European soul, they are a real multinational football team. They played very well during qualification, showing that they can play excellent football.

“In the opening match, Italy should not fear them more than is necessary but should be aware that they can play.

“Particular attention will need to be applied to Roque Santa Cruz. He is a great talent, but in his career he has had many injuries. He has been very unfortunate.”
